Asheville, North Carolina
One of Frommer’s Top Travel Destinations for 2007 mentioned recently, Asheville, is in the south western part of North Carolina.
Since we had never considered traveling to many of the destinations that were listed, we were happily surprised to see Asheville there. We have plans to travel there in the spring, so we will be able to give more specifics then.
Asheville is very big in art, and has many galleries and artists. They also have a lot of nature activities and it’s a great place to go hiking, and isn’t too far away from white water rafting. They have many well-known spas, and it is a great place to unwind and just enjoy the scenery.
Asheville is also home to the Biltmore Estate, which is America’s largest private residence. It has 250 rooms, and sits on 8,000 acres of land. They have a winery you can tour, gardens, and even an inn you can stay at while you visit.
Also nearby is the Blue Ridge Parkway. The entire parkway is 469 miles, going through both Virginia and North Carolina. You can see many trees, flowers, and wildlife while on the road. It has some incredible scenery and a great place to see nature in action.
We are going for a few reasons. We love to see waterfalls, and have heard of many beautiful waterfalls in the area. We have also been watching the show “The Best Places to Find Cash and Treasures” on the Travel Channel, and there are many gemstone mines not too far away from Asheville. We think it would be a lot of fun to go visit them, and see what treasures we can find ourselves!
As you can see, there is a lot to do in and near Asheville. We’ll be sure to update you when we get back, but I can’t imagine it won’t be a lot of fun.
